SUMMARY
Soft skills among students should be nurtured through secondary schooling. What we can see, our content and examination-oriented education system does not focus on developing students’ social skills. Plus, soft skills can help to enhance employment marketability. They are typically categorized into three majors’ categories- personal attributes, interpersonal skills and problem making decision making skills. Undergraduate also must provide with soft skills. Psychologists also agree that self image is the key to human personality an attitude. So, soft skills must be embedded into curriculum and teaching assessment.
REFLECTION
For me, soft skills are very important to our society. But, guess what, they are not only important in tough times and they are probably more important than those hard skills just about any time. What I can see, there are high competition in job field. Many graduates are unemployed. Why all these happen? Most of students nowadays are exam oriented. They just focus on academic to the extend that they are lacked of development of soft skills. Not only that, they are demanding for high salary after graduating. Most students often take courses without seeing the prospect after finishing their studies. For example, they do not know what job they can venture, what is the market demand and what is the future of their study. Therefore, students need to master the soft skills to complete the package of their studies themselves.
How soft skills can help us to survive in life? Actually, when we master in one skill, we still can survive in our life. This fact has been proving by successful writer, businessman, motivator, fisherman and others who do not even have degree in university like Hj. Samuri, Nazih, Tan Si Fong and Noram. They become a millionaire because of their skill. See, how soft skill can make our life bright. If you are the best in your academic but lack of soft skills, you are still nothing. It is very important for us to know how to communicate with others, how to organize team and lots more. That’s just the basic skill for us to know but there still have a community which just ignore that. It is hard to be a bold person among others. We have to be creative and innovative to compete with others. With the best soft skills that we had, it can make us different, more passion in our work, confident and responsible with what ever happen in our life.
Lastly, we have to realize that soft skill is very important for us. We have to stand on our own feet in the future. We should consider soft skills as what people had believed in so far: skill that are marketable and always come in handy work. I knew then, what the article tells us now, that people and "people skills" matter more than anything. That is what it takes for success in business and in life.
